Glucose Testing

Your doctor has scheduled you for a lactose tolerance test. You may have a small amount of water with any of these tests.

Here are important items to know for this test:

FASTING GLUCOSE: You may not eat, drink or smoke for 8-12 hours prior to your test. Prescription medication may be taken with a little water.

GLUCOSE 1 HOUR PG (GLPG): You should not be fasting prior to this test. You will be given a glucose drink. Exactly 1 hour after finishing this drink, your blood will be drawn. You may not eat, drink or smoke during the test.

GLUCOSE 2 HOUR PG (GL2PG): You should be fasting prior to this test. Upon arrival, your blood will be drawn if a fasting glucose is ordered from your physician. You will be given a glucose drink. Exactly 2 hours after finishing this drink, your blood will be drawn. You may not eat, drink or smoke during the test.

GLUCOSE 2 HOUR PP (GL2PP) & GLUCOMETER GLUCOSE 2 HOUR PP (GG2PP): You should be fasting prior to this test unless your physician has ordered it non-fasting. Upon arrival, your blood will be drawn if a fasting glucose is ordered from your physician. You will then be asked to eat a balanced meal. Exactly 2 hours after finishing the meal, your blood will be drawn. You may not eat, drink or smoke during these two hours.

GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TESTS (GTT 2, 3, 4 or 5): You should be fasting prior to this test. You can begin your test anytime between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Testing later than 10 a.m. requires you to fast too long. You may not eat, drink or smoke for 12 hours prior to beginning testing. Prescription medication may be taken with a little water.

A fasting blood sample will be drawn. You will then be given a glucose drink. After finishing the drink, the test timing will begin. Your blood will be drawn every hour for 2, 3, 4 or 5 hours.

You may not eat, drink or smoke during the testing period. Be aware of the times your blood needs to be drawn. Notify your nurse if someone hasn’t come to collect your blood at the correct time. Timing of the draws are critical!
