Sleep Disorders from A to ZZZZZ

Do you snore? Are you sleepy all the time? Do you wake up feeling not refreshed? If so, you may have a sleep disorder. Your health care provider can determine if a sleep study might benefit you. Most sleeping disorders can be effectively treated once they have been accurately diagnosed.

The following Epworth Sleepiness Scale measures how sleepy you are. How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired? Use the scale, below, to choose the most appropriate number for each situation:

_____ Sitting and reading
_____ Watching T.V.
_____ Sitting, inactive in a public place
_____ As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
_____ Lying down to rest in the afternoon (when permitted)
_____ Sitting and talking to someone
_____ Sitting quietly after lunch (without alcohol)
_____ In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic

To check your sleepiness score, total the points.

  • 1–6: Congratulations, you are getting enough sleep!

  • 7–8: Your score is average.

  • 9 and up: Seek the advice of a sleep specialist without delay.
