Diabetes can be a demanding health condition. Multiple finger pricks every day to test blood sugar levels is a pain. Live a more care free life while tracking your glucose numbers with a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM).
What is a CGM?
A Continuous Glucose Monitor is a self-applied sensor that monitors blood glucose levels throughout the day.
Who can use it?
The majority of people who use a CGM have Type 1 diabetes, however, research is being conducted to see how a CGM could help people with Type 2 diabetes.
Adults and children who have a doctor’s prescription are approved to use a CGM.
What are the benefits?
- Replaces majority of finger sticks (you will still need a finger stick as recommended by your doctor)
- Fewer low blood glucose emergencies with earlier warnings prior to having symptoms.
- A smart phone app can replace traditional meters and help you identify patterns and trends. Simply swipe your smart phone over the sensor to check your glucose levels. Also, a reader can be sent to the pharmacy so patients can be monitored even if they do not have a smart phone.
- It records data for you and your health care team by collecting info throughout the day.
How can I get a CGM?
Get a referral to our Endocrinology clinic if you have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. The Endocrinologist can determine if you are a candidate and apply the sensor in the clinic setting if approved by insurance.
