5 Tips to Keep Your Joints Healthy

As you age, you might experience pain in your joints that may affect your everyday activities. It is important to take care of your joints to avoid medical issues or surgery down the road.

Here are 5 tips to keep your joints healthy:

  1. Keep Moving. When your joint moves, it reduces stiffness/pain and increases your flexibility and strength.

  2. Eat Right. Vitamin C and calcium are two sources of nutrition that keep your bones and joints healthy, and battle against degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Examples of Vitamin C and calcium rich foods are: broccoli, milk, orange juice and yogurt.

  3. Hydrate. Consume at least 60 oz. (8 glasses) of water a day to keep the cartilage that is connected to your joints healthy and moving well.

  4. Don’t Smoke. Smoking can lead to reduced bone mass, and people who smoke have a higher chance of bone fractures.

  5. Avoid Weight Gain. Extra body weight puts more pressure on your lower joints and spine. If you’re overweight, losing a few pounds can take pressure off your joints and decrease joint pain.
