Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program

Welcome to the North Oaks Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. As our community grows, we are not only committed to providing care to the region, but also to helping develop future physicians to serve our community with medical excellence.

North Oaks received initial accreditation as a Sponsoring Institution from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in July 2022, laying the groundwork for the program.

Upon receiving initial accreditation from ACGME in January 2024, North Oaks Internal Medicine Residency Program has successfully accepted 7 internal medicine residents for the 2024 Academic Year starting in July 2024. Read more here.

North Oaks medical residents will train at North Oaks Medical Center and our outpatient facilities throughout the system, gaining critical experience in multiple disciplines and learning from our highly trained specialists and physician leaders.

Planning is also underway to add other medical residency programs at North Oaks, with more disciplines, through a seven-year strategic implementation plan. In addition, North Oaks has proudly participated in hosting medical student rotations and is thrilled to produce tomorrow’s physicians through the inaugural GME program. It’s another step in North Oaks’ overarching strategy to invest in the health and well-being of the Northshore community. Cultivating future physicians is a key component in growing with our region.

According to a study conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the United States will face a significant shortage of physicians by the year 2025, particularly in primary care. North Oaks values medical education and training, and President & Chief Executive Officer Michele Kidd Sutton, FACHE, is pleased to help shape the future of healthcare in the region.

Training future physicians and medical leaders in Louisiana is critical to helping improve outcomes and meet the rapidly changing and growing needs of our community.

Through the North Oaks Graduate Medical Education program, we will also drive excellence in quality and process improvement, tapping into innovative care models that address chronic disease management.
