Welcome to the North Oaks Graduate Medical Education (GME) program!

As our community grows, we are committed to providing care to the region and helping develop future physicians to serve our community with medical excellence.

North Oaks received initial accreditation as a Sponsoring Institution from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in July 2022.

What to Expect at North Oaks GME Programs

North Oaks medical residents train at North Oaks Medical Center and outpatient facilities throughout the system, gaining experience in multiple disciplines and learning from highly trained specialists and physician leaders.

  • The North Oaks Internal Medicine residency program is in its second year, with 8 residents in each class.
  • North Oaks added a Transitional Year residency and is currently in its first year with 8 residents.
  • Planning is now underway to add other residency programs through a seven-year strategic implementation plan.

North Oaks has hosted medical student rotations and is proud to produce tomorrow’s physicians through its inaugural GME program.

Why develop Graduate Medical Education at North Oaks?

According to a recent study by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the U.S. will face a significant shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036—particularly in primary care.

Training future physicians and medical leaders in Louisiana is critical to improving outcomes and meeting the growing needs of our community.

North Oaks values medical education and training, and President & Chief Executive Officer Michele K. Sutton, FACHE, is pleased to help shape the future of healthcare in the region.

Through the North Oaks GME program, we will drive excellence in quality and process improvement, using innovative care models that address chronic disease management.
