Dietetic Internships

Dietetic internship class of 10 peopel standing with sign

Thank you for your interest in the North Oaks Medical Center Dietetic Internship (NOMC DI) program located in Hammond, Louisiana. The supervised practice program is designed to prepare entry-level Registered Dietitian Nutritionists who are committed to the profession of dietetics and provide safe, courteous, compassionate care that improves the lives of patients.

Interns can expect to spend at least 24 hours per week participating in supervised practice activities. Our program is unique in that it is a part-time program making part-time employment possible.

The NOMC DI offers two paths to completion:

  1. 17-month program completing a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised practice with the NOMC dietetic internship + completion of a graduate degree.
    1. To assist interns in meeting the graduate degree requirement, the NOMC DI is affiliated with Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (Fran U) and offers an integrated Masters of Science in Nutritional Sciences (MSNS). The MSNS is an online program occurring concurrently with supervised practice. Dietetic interns will begin the MSNS in the fall semester (August) along with supervised practice rotations. Dietetic interns will be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists after completion of the 17-month program which includes 1000 hours of supervised practice and a MSNS.
    2. For information regarding course requirements and prerequisites please visit: https://franu.edu/academics/academic-programs/nutritional-sciences/thesis.
    3. This partnership is to provide ease of completion to the interns; however, the intern may select another graduate degree option to be completed in the allotted timeframe.
  2. 12-month internship-only program completing a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised practice for those who have previously earned a graduate degree.

Both tracks offer part-time supervised practice experiences. Interns are required to attend rotations 3 days per week.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will receive a verification statement and will be eligible to take the CDR credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists.

The NOMC DI accepts nine interns each year through computerized matching in the spring.
