Frequently Asked Questions

Need more information? Here are some frequently asked patient questions about mammograms, different types of mammogram screenings, and how the procedure works at North Oaks.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray image of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast health concerns.

What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?

There are two types of mammography exams:

  • Screening mammograms are performed before symptoms occur.
  • Diagnostic mammograms are conducted if symptoms are present or after abnormal screening results occur.

Both types require an order from a medical provider.

Do I need to see a medical provider to get orders for a mammogram?

Some medical providers require you to make an appointment before scheduling your annual mammogram. However, most providers will not require an appointment before scheduling if you are an established patient. If you are an established patient, most providers will be happy to send the order needed to allow you to have your mammogram.

Yes, you will need an order from your provider before scheduling your mammogram. Many North Oaks providers have standing orders that allow you to schedule your mammogram for a Screening mammogram and Additional view mammogram (when you are called back for additional images). Our scheduling department will be able to confirm whether your provider has standing orders. Another option is to reach out to your provider to ask them if they participate in our standing order process.

All diagnostic mammograms (for a history of breast cancer, new issues, or a follow-up on past concerns) will need an order from your provider. They do not fall under the standing order process.
