Cancer Care in Our Community

Cancer Care in Our Community

If you’ve ever been affected by cancer or know someone who has, you understand the overwhelming impacts it can have. You also recognize the need for expert cancer care, advanced treatment options and a supportive, healing environment.

Board-certified and double fellowship-trained Hematologist/Oncologist Georges Tanios, M.D.,

spearheaded the opening of North Oaks Hematology & Oncology Clinic in Hammond last year, expanding access to expert cancer care services closer to home for our patients and the surrounding community.

Dr. Tanios is experienced in diagnosing and treating all types of cancers, including breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, colon, thyroid, liver and more. As a hematologist, Dr. Tanios also is skilled in diagnosing and caring for patients with blood conditions, such as anemia, clotting disorders and cancers, including lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukemia.

Successfully fighting cancer hinges on personalized care and a multidisciplinary approach. North Oaks Hematology & Oncology Clinic works with our talented team of physicians, radiologists, nurses and other medical staff members to provide comprehensive cancer care, including diagnostics, surgical services, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and ongoing support services. Dr. Tanios also is passionate about community education and outreach to aid in early detection and reduce cancer impacts in our community.

This year, there will be an estimated 28,580 new cancer cases in Louisiana. Moreover, local data shows low cancer incidence rates but high mortality rates, suggesting inadequate screening and detection in our community. Dr. Tanios confirms this data, noting that many cancers in our area are not diagnosed until they are already at stage III or IV.

The good news is that screening and early intervention can save lives! Routine screening can detect cancers in their early stages when they may be more easily treated (even if you have no signs or symptoms). Certain cancer screenings are recommended depending on your age, gender, family history and lifestyle habits, such as tobacco use.

There is no sure way to prevent cancer, but you can help reduce your risk by making healthy lifestyle choices like diet and exercise, avoiding tobacco, limiting the amount of alcohol you

drink and protecting your skin from sun exposure. The most crucial way to keep yourself healthy is by staying on top of your routine health screenings and wellness checks. If you are overdue for a visit, please schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or other healthcare provider.
