North Oaks Endocrinologists Present COVID-Related Abstract at National Conference

An abstract authored by Endocrinologists A. Mannan Khan, M.D., and Corey S. Majors, M.D., of North Oaks Endocrinology was recently presented at “ENDO2021,” the national meeting of the Endocrine Society. James Lightell, M.S., of New York Institute of Technology’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Jonesboro, Arkansas co-authored the abstract with Khan and Majors.

Entitled “Hypocalcemia Secondary to SARS-CoV-2 Infection with Concurrent Worsening Symptoms,” the abstract focuses on the relationship between COVID-19 and hypocalcemia, a condition marked by lower than normal levels of calcium within the bloodstream. Their findings suggest that the COVID-19 virus depends on calcium stores in the body to replicate and increase viral load in cells through a process known as exocytosis.

ENDO2021 served as the annual gathering of the Endocrine Society, an international organization focused on the study of hormonal disorders such as diabetes. In addition to being showcased as a poster presentation during the meeting, the study abstract also appears in the April-May 2021 issue supplement of the Journal of the Endocrine Society.

Both Khan and Majors are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and have practiced with North Oaks Endocrinology since 2017. They specialize in diagnosing and treating medical conditions affecting the endocrine system, which is a collection of glands that chemically control organ function through the secretion of hormones via the circulatory system. Commonly treated conditions include: thyroid disorders and cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, pituitary disorders, hyperparathyroidism, obesity and adrenal disorders.

Khan completed fellowship training in Endocrinology and a residency in Internal Medicine through Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. He earned his medical degree through Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Majors completed a fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism through the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and an Internal Medicine residency through Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Baton Rouge. He graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.
