6 Tips to Avoid Overuse Injuries

Muscle or joint overuse injuries are common in athletes and active people. These injuries are caused a repetitive motion like throwing, serving a volleyball or swinging a hammer.

Here are 6 tips to avoid overuse injuries:

  1. Use proper technique when performing the motion (example: squats, pitching).
  1. Use properly fitted gear.
  1. Warm up. Don’t forget to stretch because it prepares your body and increases flexibility, which reduces the possibility of overuse injuries.
  1. Cool down. Don’t sit right after physical activity; instead, walk around until your heart rate adjusts back to its lower rate.
  1. Use the 10% rule. When you are returning to a sport/job after being off for a period of time, gradually increase physical activity by 10% per week until you reach 100%.
  1. Pay attention to your body. If you’re feeling pain, talk to your doctor in order to avoid injuring yourself further.
