High 5! Hand Safety Tips

Your hands are one of the most intricate and complex parts of your body, so it’s important to implement safety measures to in your daily life. Fellowship-trained orthopedic hand surgeon Dr. Nader Shourbaji shares his HIGH 5 – 5 hand safety tips.

1. Wear Gloves when working to help prevent minor injuries from becoming severe injuries. What would be a small cut could be a large gash due to not wearing gloves.

2. Ladder Safety. Make sure that you have a spotter because it is easy to lose your balance. When you fall, it is natural to brace your fall with your hands, which can lead to injuries.

3. Don’t wrap dog leashes around your fingers. Dogs get easily distracted. If they chase after something, and the leash pulls tight around your fingers, it can lead to finger fractures.

4. De-energize equipment before working on it. For example, turn off your lawn mower completely before checking the blade.

5. Cut away from yourself. For example, when slicing veggies, make sure the knife moves away from your body to avoid hand injuries.

If you are experiencing hand pain or dealing with a hand injury, schedule an appointment with Dr. Nader Shourbaji, fellowship-trained orthopedic hand specialist.
