Your Health Matters: Get Screened for Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Your Health Matters: Get Screened for Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Colorectal cancer is a major health concern in the United States. Excluding skin cancers, it is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to focus on prevention and early detection.

The good news is that most colorectal cancers can be prevented. The disease almost always begins with a small, silent growth called a polyp. These polyps typically cause no symptoms at first, which is why regular screening is so important. Tests like colonoscopies can spot polyps early so they can be removed, potentially stopping cancer before it starts.

The American Cancer Society recommends that adults start routine colorectal cancer screenings at age 45. Common screening options include:

  • Fecal occult blood tests once a year
  • Colonoscopy every 10 years, or as your doctor recommends

Screening truly saves lives by detecting problems early, when treatment is most effective.

Know the Signs. Know Your Risk

While many colorectal cancers cause no early symptoms, it’s important to pay attention to changes in your body. Possible warning signs include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Ongoing abdominal discomfort
  • Blood in the stool

Your personal risk may also be influenced by family history, diet, heritage, smoking or alcohol use. Talking with your primary care provider (PCP) can help you decide when to begin screening and which test is right for you.

North Oaks Expands Access to Life‑Saving Care

North Oaks Medical Center began seeing patients in its newly expanded Endoscopy Unit in February, a major investment designed to help more patients get the timely care they need. This $5 million project was developed in response to a 66% increase in demand for endoscopy services over the past five years.

The new unit nearly doubles procedural capacity, offering:

  • Four modern, spacious endoscopy suites
  • Advanced technology for procedures such as colonoscopy, gastroscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and more
  • Dedicated spaces for gastroenterology, pulmonology, and general surgery procedures

For patients, this means shorter wait times, faster access to appointments and quicker results, all in a comfortable, patient‑centered environment.

“This space represents far more than new walls and equipment,” shares North Oaks Endoscopy Charge Nurse Faith Hibley at a ribbon cutting for the new expansion in January.

“With more space, advanced technology and enhanced workflow, we’re better equipped to care for our community today and also well-prepared for the increasing demand we know lies ahead.”
