North Oaks Medical Center’s 8th Annual Trauma Symposium Set for Oct. 10

North Oaks Shock Trauma Center, in partnership with the North Oaks Foundation and Southeastern Louisiana University’s School of Nursing, will host the 8th Annual “Prepared for the Unexpected” Trauma Symposium on Friday, Oct. 10.

The symposium will take place from 7:30 am to 3 pm in the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center, found within North Oaks Diagnostic Center at 15837 Paul Vega, MD, Dr. on the North Oaks Medical Center campus in Hammond. Breakfast, a coffee break and lunch will be provided with time built in for participants to visit with exhibitors and browse trauma care-related resources.

Register here. Registration fees are: $100 for physicians, nurses and health care professionals; $50 for pre-hospital providers; and $25 for students with interest in surgery, trauma surgery and emergency medicine.

Presenters and topics for the symposium’s six sessions will include:

  • The History of Trauma Care in Louisiana presented by University Medical Center Trauma Surgeon Patrick Greiffenstein, MD, FACS
  • Case Study: Severe Pelvic Trauma presented by North Oaks Trauma Surgeon Gonzalo Ausqui, MD
  • You Want Me to What? A Paramedic’s Perspective on the Response and Recovery Efforts for the Bourbon Street Terrorist Attack presented by University Medical Center EMS Outreach Coordinator Elizabeth Lacy
  • The Most Difficult Neuro/Trauma Cases presented by North Oaks Neurosurgeon Edward “EJ” Burkhardt, MD
  • The Journey from Victim to Survivor presented by trauma survivor McKenzie Flash
  • Rehabilitation Continuum of the Trauma Patient: Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury and Post-operative Poly Articular Trauma co-presented by North Oaks Physiatrists Thien Ninh, MD, and Rishi Pathak, MD.

The North Oaks Medical Center Shock Trauma Center is a Level II Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons and Louisiana Department of Health. Located in Region 9, the center serves Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany and Washington parishes, with trauma surgeons on-site 24/7 to provide immediate care to patients with critical injuries.

The North Oaks Shock Trauma Center also takes part in the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN), a state agency focused on coordination of a statewide trauma care system.
