Meet the ROSA Knee System That Improves Patient Outcomes

North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center surgeons Drs. Vince Lands, Robert McAfee and Patrick Barousse use the innovative robotic technology of ROSA® Knee System to assist them in performing total knee replacements for their patients.

Knee replacement — or total knee arthroplasty — is a surgical procedure that resurfaces the cartilage surfaces of the femur and tibia, the bones which make up the knee. During the procedure, the surgeon removes damaged cartilage and replaces it with metal implants, spaced by medical-grade plastic to allow the knee to glide easily and restore range of motion.

ROSA® stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant — technology that provides the most accurate and efficient measurements for our surgeons to achieve the best alignment for your new knee joint. With ROSA® guiding them, the surgeons have full control of the entire personalized procedure. People undergoing a total knee replacement surgery with ROSA® experience shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.

“With ROSA®, we’re performing knee replacements as a same day surgery using the latest technology and advances in medicine to achieve high reliability outcomes with less pain and quicker recoveries for our patients,” Lands notes.

Unlike traditional knee replacement methods, ROSA® Knee uses a series of X-rays to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee anatomy before surgery. Orthopedic surgeons utilize this 3D model to plan the specifics of the patient’s knee replacement ahead of the procedure.

ROSA® Knee operates a camera and optical trackers attached to the leg during surgery to communicate to the surgeon exactly where the patient’s knee is in space at all times. If the leg moves even a fraction of an inch, the robot adjusts accordingly, allowing the surgeon to proceed as intended. The data provided by ROSA® Knee assists with complex decision-making and allows surgeons to apply computer and software technology that control and move surgical instruments. This allows for greater precision and flexibility during procedures.

“We remain in complete control during the procedure just as we would performing a traditional knee replacement,” McAfee explains. “It’s like a Global Positioning System (GPS), guiding us to the best position for the implant and assisting with bone resections to achieve the most precise fit.”

“With ROSA® Knee, we’re able to personalize our surgical approach to precisely place and align the knee implant to account for each patient’s unique anatomy,” Barousse added.

Depending on medical history and individual situation, a surgeon may require a patient to stay overnight for observation and healing. But with the help of ROSA®, most total knee replacement patients at North Oaks go home the same day.

Lands, McAfee and Barousse are ROSA® Knee System-certified by Zimmer Biomet Solutions. To schedule an appointment with one of our surgeons, call (985) 230-BONE (2663) or visit northoaksorthopaedic.hc.digital.
