Dr. Elizabeth Hayes Joins North Oaks

General Surgeon Elizabeth Hayes, M.D., has joined North Oaks Surgical Associates in Hammond. New patient appointments are now being scheduled. To make an appointment, call (985) 230-2778.

As a general surgeon, Dr. Hayes is certified in minimally invasive interventions like da Vinci® robotics surgical techniques. Many procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis. She specializes in the diagnosis of and surgical intervention for complex health conditions, like breast and colon cancers, bowel obstructions, gallbladder disease and hernia issues.

Dr. Hayes advocates “prehabilitation” to prepare her patients for surgery. “It’s so important because it gives my patients the opportunity to be more involved in their own care,” she explains. “Prehabilitation can include tobacco cessation, glucose control, walking or nutrient[1]rich food intake.”

Likewise, Dr. Hayes has a special interest in breast cancer treatment, having trained with a comprehensive breast program during residency in advanced localization techniques. “Breast cancer treatment is constantly evolving,” she notes. “Staying current with treatments and options for my patients is something I am passionate about.”

Hayes completed a residency in General Surgery through Ascension St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. During residency, she was honored with the 2019 Resident Teacher Award for Wayne State University School of Medicine -- also in Detroit. She earned her medical degree from Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine in Hempstead, New York.

While pursuing her medical education and training, Dr. Hayes performed extensive community outreach as a volunteer patient and caregiver attendant with St. Joseph Mercy Hospice Program in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan and as a clinic corps member for the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine Student-run Free Clinic. She also served on the school’s community service committee, which organized numerous projects and fundraisers, such as blood drives and numerous charity walks/runs to support cancer research and veterans’ affairs.

Other North Oaks Surgical Associates providers include: Drs. Daniel A. Linarello, Dorothy A. Lewis and Jennifer Owens; and Nurse Practitioner Jodee D. Bernier.
