Livingston Parish Native Edward “EJ” Burkhardt, MD, Joins North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic

Neurosurgeon and Livingston Parish native Edward “EJ” Burkhardt, MD, is returning home to join North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic effective Aug. 5. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Burkhardt, please call 985-230-2778.
His wife, Kayla Burkhardt, MD, who also hails from Livingston Parish, will be joining the North Oaks medical staff in August as an obstetrician and gynecologist.
“I grew up in and around this amazing community, and I have always wanted to come back as soon as I was able,” he explains.
Dr. Burkhardt joins North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic after completing his residency at LSU Health in Shreveport, which is renowned for having one of nation’s leading neurosurgery programs for volume.
As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Burkhardt specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, surgical and non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect any part of the nervous system, which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extracranial cerebrovascular system. His expertise extends to surgical and non-surgical treatments for back and neck disorders, including robotic spinal surgery.
“During residency, I gained extensive experience performing a large number of surgeries utilizing a variety of advanced technologies to care for my patients,” Dr. Burkhardt affirms. “Most notably, I specialized in robotic spine surgery, completing more than 100 cases.”
Dr. Burkhardt is an alumnus of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. Next, he earned a master’s degree in biological sciences from Mississippi College in Clinton followed by his medical degree from LSU Health in Shreveport.
“I have always been interested in the health sciences and fascinated by the brain and nervous system. The more I learned, the more I knew I wanted a future in healthcare,” Dr. Burkhardt explains. “Neurosurgery is the perfect fit for me. Its complexity keeps me challenged and engaged, and the opportunity to profoundly and positively improve my patients’ lives has proven incredibly fulfilling."
He continues, “My approach to patient care centers on listening to my patients first and foremost. I believe in thoroughly understanding their concerns and needs to best address the aspects of their health that I can potentially improve.”
Professionally, Dr. Burkhardt belongs to the American Medical Association, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Louisiana State Medical Society and North American Skull Base Society.
North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic is located at 15784 Medical Arts Dr., Suite B, in the Medical Arts Plaza adjacent to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. Clinic hours of operation are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays.
