North Oaks Sports Medicine Recognizes Student-Athletes

The North Oaks Sports Medicine team is cheering for D’Antonio Daigre, Thomas Shepard, Cameron Tate and Taylin Underwood as “Student-Athletes of the Month.”

Walker High School’s Daigre has a 3.7 grade point average (GPA). He is a power lifter, and has “moved up in weight classes to selflessly make room for other teammates,” according to Coach James Roberts. He also has been recognized by all-state academic football, by all-parish football and as Powerlifting East Regional Runner-Up.

Shepard is Ponchatoula High School’s leading scorer on the basketball team, and is an excellent rebounder, according to Coach Thomas Taylor. He adds that Shepard, who has a 3.8 GPA, excels in academics, has high standards and always has an encouraging word for his teammates.

Underwood, a forward on Doyle High School’s girls’ basketball team, recently scored her 3,000th career point, one of only eight athletes in Louisiana history to achieve that record. She has a 4.0 GPA, and will be playing basketball for Southeastern Louisiana University in the fall. Coach Guy McDonald points out that she has led her team to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and is a leader in her senior class.

From August 2013 to April 2014, North Oaks Sports Medicine staff and North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center physicians will choose a male and female from the two parishes who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher; excel in athletic competition; participate in school and community organizations; and have earned the respect of coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers. In May, they will choose a “Student-Athlete of the Year” from all the monthly honorees. Nominations are accepted from coaches, athletic directors and principals.

Nomination forms are posted at www.northoaks.org/athlete or can be requested by calling North Oaks Sports Medicine at (985) 230-5248.
