North Oaks 2022 Trauma Symposium Offers Expert Trauma Education

North Oaks Health System’s Shock Trauma Center, in partnership with the North Oaks Foundation, will host its annual “Prepared for the Unexpected” Shock Trauma Symposium Tuesday, November 29 and Wednesday, November 30. Participants can choose from one of the two scheduled conference days.

“Our goal is to provide high-quality educational opportunities for trauma providers in our region and elevate optimum care for traumatically injured patients,” affirms Dr. Marquinn Duke, trauma program medical director for North Oaks Shock Trauma Center.

Each date of the symposium will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center (inside North Oaks’ Outpatient Diagnostic Center), located at 15837 Paul Vega, M.D., Drive in Hammond. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The conference is appropriate for physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, pre-hospital personnel and nursing students who practice or study in the areas of surgery, trauma surgery and emergency medicine.

Several North Oaks Health System surgeons and trauma care experts will headline the event. Conference sessions include:

  • The Traumatized Hand presented by North Oaks Orthopedic Specialty Center Hand & Wrist Surgeon Nadar Shourbaji, M.D.
  • Neurological Assessment of a Trauma Patient presented by North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic Neurosurgeon Lon Alexander, M.D.
  • Triage and Aftermath of the Las Vegas Shooting presented by North Oaks Shock Trauma Center Trauma Surgeon Lauren Baumgarten, M.D.
  • A Five Year Review of the North Oaks Medical Center Facial Trauma Program presented by North Oaks ENT & Allergy Clinic ENT/Facial Trauma Surgeon D’Antoni Dennis, M.D.

Online registration is available HERE through Tuesday, November 15. The registration fee is $25 for all attendees. North Oaks Health System will cover the registration fee for its employees who attend the symposium.

Contact hours of continuing nursing education are pending approval. North Oaks Health System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Louisiana State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The North Oaks Medical Center Level II Shock Trauma Center is verified and designated as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and Louisiana Department of Health. The center provides coordinated care with trauma surgeons in-house to attend to victims suddenly stricken by serious traumatic injury. North Oaks is one of five Level II trauma centers in the state.

In addition, North Oaks Shock Trauma Center is part of the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN), an agency of state government created to develop and maintain a statewide system of care coordination for trauma patients.
