5 Things African-Americans Should Know About Prostate Cancer

1. 1 in 6 African-American men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime.

2. African-American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer more than U.S. men of any other race. They are 1.7 times more likely than white men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

3. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in African-American men. Fortunately, the prostate cancer death rate for all men has been decreasing steadily since the early 1990s, and from 2003 to 2012, this rate declined faster for African-American males.

4. Nearly 97 percent of African-American men diagnosed with prostate cancer in its early stages are still alive five years after diagnosis.

5. Exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a heart-healthy diet can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
