Barrient Promoted to Administrator of North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital

Mac Barrient, PT, has been promoted to administrator of North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital.

Barrient, a 31-year veteran North Oaks employee, succeeds longtime administrator Sybil Paulson, who retired July 4 from the health system after 39 years of dedicated service.

As administrator, Mac will work in collaboration with the health system’s senior leadership, as well as the hospital’s board of managers and medical staff to provide oversight for the facility, which has consistently garnered international and national accolades for patient outcomes and experiences since it opened in 1995.

“Mac’s enthusiasm and passion for building upon the good work and reputation of North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital is palpable,” asserts North Oaks Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michele Sutton, FACHE. “He has consistently performed as a top tier member on the rehabilitation hospital’s leadership team for more than a decade. I have every confidence that Mac will continue to move North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital and our mission of improving lives forward.”

Since 2014, he has served as director of both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services at all health system facilities in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes, including the disciplines of: occupational, speech and physical therapy; audiology; sports medicine; and special programs. From 2009-2014, he managed all outpatient rehabilitation services in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes. Previous to entering management, he worked in direct patient care for 17 years as a physical therapist specializing in treatment of orthopedic patients across the scope of North Oaks’ rehabilitation continuum.

In December 2018, he was honored as North Oaks Leader of the Month. He also holds the distinction of receiving the health system’s first physical therapy tech stipend (with accompanying work commitment) in 1989 at the start of his North Oaks’ career.

Barrient earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy with honors through Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans. Before that, he completed an associate degree in General Studies through Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital,” Barrient states. “I look forward to working with our expert staff to further enhance the caliber of service we provide to our patients and their families.”

North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital is the only facility of its kind in a seven-parish area accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). It is also home to one of only five CARF-accredited stroke specialty programs in Louisiana.

As of North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital’s latest re-accreditation survey in April 2019, the hospital continues to rank among the top 3% of 22,000 facilities worldwide surveyed by CARF for receiving no recommendations for improvement.

In addition to stroke patients, those who may benefit from inpatient rehabilitation often have had a brain injury; surgery for joint replacement or other orthopedic or spinal cord injuries; or diagnosis of a neurological disorder, arthritis or other congenital conditions.

An 8,000-square-foot treatment area, featuring a kitchen and laundry area for patients to practice daily living skills, anchors the hospital. The facility also contains a transitional living apartment, therapeutic garden and aquatic center.
