North Oaks Sports Medicine Announces Student-Athletes of the Month for December

The North Oaks Sports Medicine team has chosen Bobbi Amar, Keenan Austin, Marshall Graves and Samara Scott as “Student-Athletes of the Month” for December 2013.

St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School (STA) junior Bobbi Amar, 17, has a 4.0 GPA. She is a cross country distance runner. She was the school’s top runner during the first part of the season, taking first place in the Ponchatoula Practice and STA Invitational meets. This year, she is ranked twelfth overall in all classes in 3 miles and has the second best time in Class 2A Cross Country.

Coach Miguel Becerra describes Amar as a great leader who encourages all of her teammates, both on the field and in the classroom. She participates in Campus Ministry, Student Council, Principal’s Advisory Committee and Beta Club. She is the daughter of Darrell Amar and Mikki Vicknair.

Keenan Austin, 16, is a Springfield High School sophomore, who is a guard on the boys basketball team. He also is a baseball player and starting free safety for the football team with three interceptions this season.

Head Football Coach/Athletic Director Ryan Serpas notes that, even as a sophomore, Austin distinguished himself as a starter in several basketball games this season and continues to improve each week.

Austin is an active member of Future Farmers of America, Beta Club and the Builders Club. He is the son of Nathan and Kayla Austin.

Fifteen-year-old Marshall Graves is a sophomore boys basketball player at Hammond High Magnet School. He averages 14 points and six rebounds per game, and is 9-3 overall to start the season.

Head Boys Basketball Coach Brent Grigas calls Graves a role model, who student athletes admire as a balanced individual. He adds that he is a phenomenal athlete, working hard on the court and in the classroom.

Graves is a member of National Honor Society and active in his church. He is the son of Amy and Marshall Graves.

Samara Scott, 17, is a senior girls basketball point guard at Springfield High School. Head Girls Basketball Coach Lisa Thornton shares that Scott has shown great leadership and character, despite some obstacles this season, and is one of the most respectful and hard-working athletes she has coached. Many hours of hard work and dedication have increased her skill level and confidence, Thornton adds.

Scott is treasurer of the school’s Builders program, a member of Library Club and Talent Search. She also gives of her time to the Young at Heart Club senior citizen center each week and volunteers for TARC and Louisiana Special Olympics. She is the daughter of Lovenia Scott and the late Sam Scott.

From August 2013 to April 2014, North Oaks Sports Medicine staff and North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center physicians will choose a male and female from the two parishes who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, excel in athletic competition, participate in school and community organizations and have earned the respect of coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers. In May, they will choose a “Student-Athlete of the Year” from all the monthly honorees.

Nominations are accepted from coaches, athletic directors and principals.
