Geriatrician Abir Abdo, MD, Appointed Medical Director of North Oaks Hospice

Abir Abdo, MD, a fellowship-trained and board-certified geriatrician, has been named medical director of North Oaks Hospice. Dr. Abdo will continue to see patients at Northshore Internal Medicine Associates, a clinic affiliated with North Oaks where she has practiced since 2021. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and chronic conditions in older adults.

“I am very passionate about serving the elderly and their family members,” said Dr. Abdo. “Everyone deserves the best quality of life possible, and it is rewarding to help patients work toward that goal.”

North Oaks Hospice cares for patients in the terminal phase of illnesses and their families. The hospice team includes the medical director, a clinic director, an attending physician, registered nurses, social workers, volunteers and administrators coordinating care.

In her new role, Dr. Abdo will oversee the development and implementation of patient care plans with the hospice team. She also will manage the overall care hospice patients receive, guide the healthcare team on pain and symptom management, advocate for the patient’s end-of-life wishes and ensure North Oaks Hospice complies with guidelines established by the Louisiana Department of Health and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

“Dr. Abdo is a true advocate for her patients – assisting them in navigating through some of the most vulnerable times of their lives,” Hospice Director Lisa Goings, RN, commented. “Her experience and sensitivity in treating older adults translate to hospice care for patients of all ages. She displays genuine compassion and has a heart for focusing on the patient’s quality of life.”

Certified in geriatrics by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Abdo brings more than 10 years of experience in her field. She previously provided medical care at Lafon Nursing Home in New Orleans and also served as medical director of the Concerned Care Home Health and Hospice in Covington.

Since 2016, Dr. Abdo has led the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where she also has been a faculty member since 2012. Her academic experience includes roles at Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Staten Island University Hospital in New York, and the American University of Beirut School of Medicine in Lebanon.

Fluent in English, French and Arabic, Dr. Abdo earned her medical degree from Lebanese University School of Medicine in Lebanon. She completed an internship and a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in geriatrics at Staten Island University Hospital in New York.
