X-Ray Services at North Oaks

Diagnostic radiology is the branch of medicine best known for taking and reading X-rays, and is the nucleus of almost every medical provider’s diagnosis. Being able to detect disease sooner and pinpoint its location more accurately is a huge factor in stopping disease in its tracks. Because of the evolution of X-rays and the field of diagnostic radiology, medicine is being changed daily.

Fluoroscopy X-ray is “real-time” imaging used by medical professionals to visualize internal organs while they are in motion. Sometimes a contrast material is used in conjunction with fluoroscopy to help medical experts see how the substance is moving through the body. These images are captured on a video screen and help medical providers detect conditions, such as colon cancer, reflux, ulcers and causes of abdominal pain.

Common Types of X-rays

Following are commonly offered X-rays. Please contact us for questions about these and other imaging capabilities:

• Abdominal imaging looks at organs and structures in the abdomen.
• Bone imaging uses a small dose of ionizing radiation to create images of any bone in your body. It is used in diagnosing fractured bones and joint dislocation.
• Chest X-rays produce images of your heart, lungs, blood vessels, airways and the bones of your chest and spine. Chest X-rays can reveal fluid in or around the lungs, as well as air surrounding a lung.
• Fluoroscopy (lower GI) uses a special form of X-ray, called fluoroscopy, and a contrast material, called barium, or a water-soluble iodinated contrast. Fluoroscopy allows medical professionals to see internal organs in motion.
• Fluoroscopy (upper GI) is a standard series of fluoroscopic X-rays that radiologists take of a patient’s upper gastrointestinal tract.
• Lumbar puncture (LP) is a test that checks the fluid circulating around the brain and spinal cord.
• Myelography is an imaging test that checks for problems in your spinal canal.

How Are Results Provided?

Results are typically provided to your medical provider within 48 hours of your visit. Studies are read by a board-certified radiologist with North Oaks Imaging Associates. Your results are available to your medical provider in a CD format upon request.
