Caring for Our Smallest Patients

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at North Oaks Medical Center is specifically designed to cater to the special needs of the hospital's tiniest patients. Equipped with advanced equipment and personnel trained in caring for babies born prematurely or encountering other health issues, the unit is well-equipped to provide successful and efficient care for infants weighing less than two pounds. The NICU team comprises of a highly skilled staff, a neonatologist, and a neonatal nurse practitioner, available 24/7 to ensure that your child receives the special attention he or she requires, should the need arise.

Highly-Ranking Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Our entire staff is committed to ensuring the health of your baby so that you can take them home and start building a family together. Our dedication has been recognized, as North Oaks NICU has been ranked among the top 25 percent in the United States by the prestigious Vermont Oxford Study.

Donor Human Milk Program

North Oaks NICU is delighted to offer the Donor Human Milk Program, which provides babies in the NICU with donated human milk with parental consent. This is especially beneficial for premature babies who are more vulnerable to developing potentially life-threatening intestinal infections. If a baby is born prematurely or has a low birth weight, they may be eligible to receive donor milk.

Human milk is crucial for the well-being of babies born prematurely. It provides the ideal nutrition for growth, fights infection, promotes brain development and may even shorten the hospital stay of a growing premature baby. With the Donor Milk Program, preterm babies can still receive the benefits of breast milk, even if their mother is unable to provide her own milk. This program may be used for a short time while the mother is trying to produce enough milk or for a longer period if necessary. A neonatologist may recommend donor human milk for your newborn, and our lactation consultants are available to answer any questions you may have.
