Interventional radiology procedures use imaging guidance technology, along with the skill of a physician, to diagnose and treat certain illnesses.
One way this technology is used involves injecting dye into the artery. The natural pumping action of the artery causes the dye to travel through the body. Sophisticated software tracks the progress of the dye and records where it has been. This provides a road map for the physician, and enables a catheter as thin as kite string to be inserted into the body through an artery in the groin area. Using the computer-created map, the physician guides the catheter through every bend and turn in the arteries on the way to the problem area.
