Interventional radiology procedures are so named because they use imaging guidance technology, along with the skill of a physician, to intervene and change the course of certain illnesses.
For one division of these procedures, X-ray contrast is injected into the artery, and the natural pumping action of the artery causes the contrast to travel through the body. Sophisticated software tracks the progress of the contrast and records where it has been. This provides a road map for the physician. A catheter as thin as kite string is inserted into the body through the groin area. Using the computer-created map, the physician guides the catheter through every bend and turn in the arteries on the way to the problem area.
How will interventional radiology affect the future of medicine?
- Less invasive
- Fewer side effects
- Less expensive
- Faster recovery
- Increased quality of life
