North Oaks Heart Health Center held its third annual free “Change of Heart Expo” screening event on Saturday, February 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the North Oaks Diagnostic Center in Hammond in observance of American Heart Month.
The 86 participants learned about the affects of heart disease and the role lifestyle changes may have in preventing heart damage. Fifteen participants were found to be at high risk of heart disease requiring follow-up medical testing, while 29 were found to be at moderate risk for heart disease. The “by appointment” event offered each participant free cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose screenings, a resting EKG, blood pressure and heart rate checks, a heart risk assessment and a personal consultation with a cardiologist concerning screening results. This free screening package was valued at $200 per participant. A mini-health fair also offered optional diabetes and sleep disorder risk assessments, as well as smoking cessation and wellness information, and tours of the North Oaks Sleep Disorders Center.
Participating cardiologists included Patrick A. Delaney, M.D., and Marc Bernstein, M.D. The cardiologists were joined by 37 North Oaks employees and volunteers who also gave of their time to make the expo possible.
