All classes and meetings are held in the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center, located within North Oaks Diagnostic Center, unless otherwise noted.

Classes for Families & Children

Car Seat Fitting Station—Free
Certified child passenger safety technicians are available by appointment to install child passenger safety seats and boosters and provide instruction to ensure the safe transport of children of all ages.

Body Beautiful I Class: Puberty—Free
Feb. 16, 6 p.m.
This class is designed for girls (grades 4-5) and a parent/guardian to discuss the physical and emotional changes that occur in adolescent girls.

Prepared Childbirth—$40
Feb. 18, 9 a.m.
This 7-hour class covers the stages of labor and how to prepare for each. Participants learn and practice various coping techniques for labor and delivery.

Prenatal I Class: Families Under Construction—Free
Mar. 6, 6 p.m.
This class focuses on preparing your home for your newborn, pregnancy anatomy, true and false labor, as well as hospital procedures.

Something for Siblings Class—Free
Mar. 8, 5 p.m.
This class is for the new big brother or sister (ages 3-10) to help him or her adjust to the new baby.

Breastfeeding Class—Free
Mar. 8, 6 p.m.
This class is for parents who may be considering breastfeeding or who have already decided to breastfeed their baby. Topics include positioning the baby properly, nutrition, pumping and storing breast milk and the benefits of breastfeeding.

CPR and First Aid Classes

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR—$30 (for medical professionals)
Feb. 15, 5 p.m.
Mar. 7, 5 p.m.

This American Heart Association class is designed for health care providers. It provides a lecture on cardiovascular health and risk factors; and demonstrations of American Heart Association basic life support techniques for choking victims, rescue breathing and CPR for adults, children, and infants. Participants are introduced to and participate in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Participants must successfully complete manikin check off, AED simulation and a written exam in order to successfully complete this certification.

American Heart Association Heartsaver AED CPR Class—$20 (for the layperson)
Feb. 23, 5 p.m.
This class incorporates demonstrations of the American Heart Association’s lifesaving techniques for choking, rescue breathing and CPR for adults, children and infants. Participants are introduced to and participate in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Participants must successfully complete manikin check off and AED simulation in order to successfully complete this certification.


The American Heart Association (AHA) strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the Association.

Support Group Meetings

Group Living with Affective Disorders Support Group
Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27; Mar. 5: 6 p.m.

This support group is designed for participants of all ages experiencing anxiety disorders, mental illness, post-traumatic, OCD and bipolar conditions. Meetings are held weekly.

Diabetes Support Group
Feb. 7, 6 p.m. “Healthy Food on a Budget”
Mar. 7, 3 p.m. “Dining Out with Diabetes”

This support group is designed for those with diabetes, along with their family members and friends, to share experiences, motivate each other, energize their outlook and renew their commitment. The group is facilitated by North Oaks Diabetes Education, which has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-management Education. Meetings are held monthly.

Families Touching Families—Filling the Gap Meeting
Feb. 11, 25; Mar. 10: 10 a.m.

This support group is designed for children who are separated from their parents due to incarceration, divorce, separation or disaster situations. Meetings are held twice a month.

Tighten Up Support Group
Feb. 13, 5:30 p.m.

This support group is designed specifically for those who have had or are considering weight loss surgery. Family and friends are welcome to attend and offer support. Meetings are held monthly.

Connection Peer Support Group (NAMI)
Feb. 13, 6:30 p.m.

This support group is designed for adults suffering from a mental illness of any diagnosis, as well as their family members. It offers a casual and relaxed approach to sharing the challenges and successes of coping with mental illness. Each group session is led by trained individuals who also are in the recovery process. Meetings are held monthly.

Family-to-Family Support Group (NAMI)
Feb. 16, 6:30 p.m.

This support group is designed for family members who have someone in their family suffering from a mental illness. Family members learn how to support their loved ones and are able to receive information about NAMI education courses, as well as other valuable, local resources on mental illness through this support group. Meetings are held monthly.

Northlake Area Transplant Support Group
Mar. 1, 7 p.m.

This support group is designed for individuals, who have had or are waiting for an organ transplant, and their loved ones. Meetings are held quarterly.

Upcoming Special Events

“Change of Heart” Expo – Free
Feb. 4, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
North Oaks Diagnostic Center, Hammond
Feb. 25, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
Livingston Parish Medical Complex, Livingston

Be good to your heart this February during American Heart Month! This event is designed to help identify your risk for heart disease and to promote healthy lifestyle changes. The screenings will include a Heart Risk Assessment with blood pressure and cholesterol check and consultation by a heart health professional (if deemed moderate or high risk), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm(AAA), Peripheral Vascular Disease(PVD) and Carotid Artery Disease screenings.  The expo will also feature an expanded health fair, heart-healthy cooking demonstrations and physician-led seminars about hot health topics.
