Focus on Health

Alcohol Awareness
This program addresses alcohol use among teens giving up-to-date statistical information, usage rates and patterns, negative consequences of alcohol, and how the body and brain are affected.  (Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Blood Pressure: The Silent Killer
This program addresses general information regarding blood pressure, risk factors, symptoms, detection, prevention and treatment.  Participants will also be given free blood pressure checks.
(Suggested Time: 30 minutes)

Cancer: The Facts
This presentation will concentrate on the basics of cancer to include definition, statistical facts, known causes and common symptoms.  Information will also be given in regards to early warning signs and discussion of known prevention tips.

Depression
This illness is so often undiagnosed and one of the leading causes of suicide.  Do you know the signs of depression?  This presentation will discuss different warning signs of depression and numerous treatment options available to those suffering from this illness.

Exercise Body and Soul
This class explores different types of physical activity and how to incorporate moderate amounts of physical activity into a daily routine to improve health.  Common myths associated with exercise are also discussed.

Healthy Resolution
This seminar is based on choosing healthy lifestyles which includes a focus on healthy eating choices, increasing physical activity, guarding against bone loss, taking age related health exams seriously, and focusing on self.  This program can accommodate a mixed audience or a focus on women or men specifically.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Heart Gender Matters
This seminar focuses on the heart truth for women.  This presentation promotes awareness of heart disease in women and identifies unique risk factors, symptoms and treatment of women.  This program also includes ways to reduce controllable risk factors by addressing issues such as stress management.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

HIV / AIDS Awareness
American Red Cross HIV / AIDS certified instructors present current information on this very important topic.  Participants will obtain clarification about any misinformation or myths about HIV / AIDS.  Transmission of HIV will be discussed, as well as ways to show compassion for people who are infected with HIV.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Nicotine: A Powerful Addiction
This class will offer the facts about tobacco and its harmful effects.  Participants will be given guidance and encouragement for taking the first steps towards quitting.  Information on the skills, behavior modification and medications that can help avoid relapse are also discussed. 
(Suggested Time: 90 minutes)

Osteoporosis
This presentation addresses a major public health threat that affects over 10 million individuals, primarily women.  This program’s emphasis includes identification of risk factors, signs and symptoms as well as a focus on prevention.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases
This abstinence based program presents up-to-date information on transmission, prevention, and treatment of the most common sexually transmitted disease (STDs).

Women’s Health
This class is designed to cover a variety of health related issues facing women today.    Proposed topics include: breast health, breast self-examination, mammography, osteoporosis, menopause, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, premenstrual syndrome, and gynecological issues. 
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Prenatal
Class topics will cover:

Nutrition:  A registered dietician discusses the role of proper nutrition, healthy snacking, and meal planning for a healthy pregnancy. 

Families Under Construction:
This portion covers preparation of the home and vehicle for the arrival of the newborn baby.  Home and car seat safety are discussed.  It also explores the physical and mental changes that expectant mothers may experience.  Other topics involve: preterm labor; signs of labor; true/false labor questions; and how to determine when to come to the hospital.

Labor and Delivery:
Helpful tips to alleviate the anxieties associated with labor are discussed.  Topics include: anesthesia in childbirth, the stages of childbirth, and medical interventions.  Coping techniques and hospital procedures are also discussed.

Your Beautiful Baby:
Caring for a newborn can be both exciting and exhausting!  This class portion focuses on the post-partum recovery period and your amazing newborn.  Hands-on demonstrations of diapering and bathing are paired with discussions of other care issues including crying, illness, and doctor visits.

CPR and First Aid

American Red Cross First Aid Training Demo - Free
Participants will become familiar with how to recognize and care for victims of illness and sudden emergencies.  Participants will also learn how to control bleeding, care for burns, respond to poisoning, immobilize joints and strained muscles, and access emergency contacts.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

American Red Cross First Aid Basics - $20.00
A certified instructor will train individuals to become familiar with how to recognize and care for victims of illnesses and sudden emergencies.  Upon proper demonstration of all skills outlined in the course and a passing grade on a written test, participants will receive a certification card signifying successful completion.
(Minimum 4 hours)

Basic Life Support Demo – Free
Participants will be shown rescue breathing and CPR techniques on an unresponsive victim.  The Heimlich maneuver on a choking victim is also demonstrated, and proper of use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is introduced.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

CPR for Family and Friends (for the community) - $5.00
Participants will learn the American Heart Association’s four links to the chain of survival for adults, children, and infants.  They also learn how to perform CPR, how to relieve a foreign body airway obstruction, and how to perform rescue breathing on unresponsive adults, children, and infants.
(Minimum 4 hours)

Heartsaver CPR (for the layperson) - $15.00
This class incorporates demonstrations of the American Heart Association’s lifesaving techniques for choking, rescue breathing and CPR for adults, children, and infants.  (Minimum 4 hours)

Health Care Provider Initial CPR (for medical professionals) - $20.00
 This is the American Heart Association’s initial class for health care providers.  It provides a lecture on cardiovascular health and risk factors; demonstrations of American Heart Association basic life support techniques for choking victims, rescue breathing and CPR for adults, children, and infants.  Participants are introduced to and participate in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).  Participants must successfully complete manikin check off, AED simulation and a written exam in order to successfully complete this certification.
(Minimum 6 hours)

Health Care Provider Renewal CPR (for medical professionals) - $20.00
This is the American Heart Association’s renewal class for health care providers.  It provides a lecture on cardiovascular health and risk factors; demonstrations of American Heart Association basic life support techniques for choking victims, rescue breathing and CPR for adults, children, and infants.  Participants are required to demonstrate techniques correctly and must pass a written test to receive certification.  Providers will also be checked off on an AED simulation scenario.
(Minimum 4 hours)

Infant and Child CPR – Free
This program is offered for expecting mothers who are interested in learning infant and child CPR.  Participants will learn how to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and prevent common injuries and choking in infants and children.  They will learn to recognize the signs of life-threatening emergencies in infants and children.  Also, they will learn how to perform CPR and relieve a foreign body airway obstruction on a choking victim. 
(Minimum 2 hours)

Safety and Prevention

Child Passenger Safety
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children, ages 2-5, in the United States.  Knowing how to properly install a car seat can save more than 2,500 lives every year.  This class will discuss current statistics, misuse and proper installation techniques.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Fire Safety
This program offers information on fire prevention.  Participants are encouraged to incorporate fire safety into their home environment and to practice safety at all times.  Developing a fire escape route and caring for burns caused by fire, chemicals or electricity also are topics covered.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Internet Safety
Participants will be introduced to the dangers of Internet usage, chat rooms, credit card fraud, identity theft, and potentially dangerous situations of the “cyber” world.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Protecting Yourself
This program offers information on protecting yourself from infectious diseases when taking care of individuals who are at high risk for these diseases.  Participants are encouraged to practice preventative hygiene in order to protect themselves.
(Suggested Time: 2 hours)

Safety in the Home
This class explores safety issues and safety hazards in the home, such as poisoning, calling for emergency assistance, and ways to prevent injuries or sudden illnesses.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Stranger Danger
This program helps parents become more aware of how strangers and others lure and trick children into unsafe situations.  Also, parents learn how to educate their children about staying safe and being cautious around people who can hurt or violate them.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Summer Safety
This class addresses hot weather issues pertinent to seniors and keeping them safe during the hot summer months.  Topics covered include prevention, signs of heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.  Participants are also given safety tips on such topics as insect bites, food borne illnesses, and keeping your home cool.
(Suggested Time: 30-45 minutes)

Life Skills

Advanced Directives
This program gives participants the necessary information needed in order to prepare formal documentation allowing adults to make medical care decisions in advance of a terminal or irreversible illness or accident.  By documenting wishes in advance, families will not have to make difficult future decisions.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Building a Family’s Self-Esteem
Parents will understand the effects of positive self-esteem on a family.  When a person feels capable and competent, he/she is better able to live life with inner strength and creativity.  Parents will learn how to give the gift of self-esteem to their children.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Child Development
In this class, we focus on the developmental needs of the newborn child up to 6 years of age.  Concentration focuses on the four important areas of child development; language skills, understanding, control of large and small muscles, and problem solving.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Children’s Fears
This class examines common fears and anxieties in children, including fear of animals and separation anxiety.  Participants will find the underlying causes of most fears very interesting as they explore ways to help children deal with them effectively.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Communicating With Your Child
This class is designed to encourage parents to evaluate current methods of communicating with their children.  Participants will learn prepared, non-threatening ways to verbalize thoughts on a child’s level.

Pampering Yourself
Need some fresh ideas on how to “baby” yourself?  We’ve got just the right thing for you.  This presentation is packed full with different suggestions that are sure to make you feel more relaxed and wonderful!

Parenting in the 21st Century
This program is designed to help parents face the challenges of raising teenagers.  The class will focus on communication skills and the importance of setting boundaries.

Professionalism in the Workplace
This program is designed to meet the needs of a diverse 21st century labor pool.  This program focuses on the behaviors expected in a professional work environment including appearance, attitude, telephone courtesy, written communications and customer care.  Participants will also learn to recognize the importance of first impressions and how successful office staff focus on team approach to customer care.

Self-Esteem
This program explores ways participants can identify low and high self-esteem and the positive and negative effects they have on our happiness and success.  Building self-esteem for adults and children is also covered in this class.
(Suggested Time: 1 hour)

Something for Siblings
This class is for families expecting a new baby.  Children, ages 4-12, will hear a story and view a film about siblings and the feelings they may experience.  Hands-on practice of feeding and diapering a doll makes this program lots of fun for older brothers and sisters-to-be.
(Suggested Time: 90 minutes)

Stress Management
This class helps identify sources of both “good stress” and “bad stress.”  Dealing with, or avoiding typical stressful situations, relaxation techniques, and health issues associated with stress are also topics covered in this class.

Time Management
This class is designed to encourage participants to analyze current time usage, set personal goals, and prioritize daily activities.  Techniques discussed will help participants recognize roadblocks to effective time management.
