Overview:
The Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Unit provides quality, short-term inpatient nursing and rehabilitative care for patients with one of the following diagnoses:

  • Amputations
  • Arthritis
  • Brain injuries
  • Joint replacements
  • Major multiple traumas
  • Neurological disorders
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Strokes.

Admission Criteria:

  • Ability to participate in at least 3 hours of therapy daily
  • Desire and potential to benefit from rehabilitation
  • Need for at least two types of therapy: physical, occupational and/or speech therapy
  • Need for inpatient rehabilitation as a result of a medical condition
  • Approval by the Medical Director

Accreditations:
The CMR Unit has earned the highest possible accreditation awarded by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital is the only CARF-accredited rehabilitation facility in a six-parish area, which includes Ascension, Livingston, St. Helena, St. John the Baptist, Tangipahoa and Washington, according to a January 2009 CARF report. North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital also holds accreditation by The Joint Commission.

Patient Outcomes:
As a means of bencharking patients’ levels of function, the CMR Unit relies on Functional Independence Measurement Scores (FIM Scores). These scores indicate how well patients progress during their stay. And, once again, in 2009, the CMR Unit has exceeded regional and national standards for patient outcomes. Not only do North Oaks CMR Unit patients make greater functional improvements when compared to similar patients across the nation, but also they make greater functional improvements in fewer days than patients in other rehabilitation facilities. Patient Satisfaction:
According to an independent patient satisfaction survey conducted by Press Ganey, Inc. (the industry leader in patient satisfaction measurement) the CMR Unit ranked in the 97th percentile for overall patient satisfaction for 2009*. This means that CMR Unit patients rated their experience in the top 3% when compared to all inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the country.

*All rankings are based on surveys received by Press Ganey from January 1 – December 31, 2009.

Achievements:
North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital received an award from Uniform Data Systems for Medical Rehab (UDSMR) for ranking in the "Top 10" of 813 rehabilitation hospitals for "Program Evaluation Model" for 2008.
