New Leaf Psychiatry & Counseling Center Opens in Livingston Dec. 5

New Leaf Psychiatry & Counseling Center opens to patient care on Monday, Dec. 5 at North Oaks-Livingston Parish Medical Complex, located at 17199 Spring Ranch Road in Livingston at I-12 Exit 19.

The center will be staffed by Psychiatrist Michelle Barnum, MD, who is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has more than 20 years of practice experience.

Dr. Barnum specializes in adult psychiatry, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of individuals, 18 years of age and up, with chemical imbalances in the brain. She excels at teaching people to enjoy life with relaxation techniques and basic life care skills. Her treatment methods also include talk therapy and, if necessary, prescription medication.

After earning her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC, and completing her internship and residency at Howard University Hospital, Dr. Barnum owned and operated her own psychiatry practice for 19 years. She also has worked as a psychiatric consultant, medical director and staff psychiatrist.

“My work as a psychiatrist allows me to combine the science of treating the brain with the art of helping people learn to use their minds to better cope with life’s stressors,” Dr. Barnum explains. “North Oaks and I share a common goal to provide the best medical care to our patients in a compassionate and competent manner.”

A second location of New Leaf Psychiatry & Counseling Center is expected to open in Hammond in early 2012 in the North Oaks Clinic Building, located at 15813 Paul Vega, MD, Drive on the North Oaks Medical Center campus.
