The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses and is usually associated with colder weather months. On average, it affects 5 to 20 percent of the population every year. Flu symptoms may include: fever, headache, exhaustion, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, and stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The flu is mainly spread through the coughing or sneezing of infected individuals, but you may become infected if you touch something with the flu virus on it and then touch your mouth or nose. You may pass the flu to others before your symptoms develop, as well as while you are sick.
The flu shot is recommended for anyone over 6 months of age to reduce chances of getting the flu. Certain people, such as senior adults, young children, and people with specific health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. It is highly recommended that these individuals receive the flu vaccination.
