Diabetes Support Group to Talk about Types of Carbohydrates

When you have diabetes, it’s important to know the difference between complex versus simple carbohydrates.North Oaks Dietetic Intern Emily Thevis will explain how to identify the different types of carbohydrates and why it’s important to choose them wisely at the Wednesday, May 1 meeting of the North Oaks Diabetes Support Group. The free meeting will take place from 3-4 p.m. at the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center, located within North Oaks Diagnostic Center at 15837 Paul Vega, MD, Drive in Hammond. Registration is not required.

Dr. Lauren Davis, a pulmonologist and medical director of the North Oaks Sleep Disorders Center, will talk about the link between lack of sleep and diabetes at the AWAKE support group meeting on April 17. AWAKE support group meetings are sponsored quarterly by the North Oaks Sleep Disorders Center, which is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

On March 1, Jaymien Jonathan Sandon made history as the first baby born at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, La. to have his medical information recorded in a computer-based Electronic Health Record with the hospital’s new e-ONE system. Jaymien is pictured with his parents, Jonathan and Kari Sandon of Livingston, La., and delivering physician Jaime Edwards, MD, of Magnolia Obstetrics & Gynecology in Hammond and Walker. The North Oaks Women & Children’s Services staff presented Jaymien with a special certificate and a toy laptop to commemorate the historic circumstances surrounding his birth.
