Did you know?

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death in Louisiana, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average in the U.S., someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every 3 minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Stroke Warning Signs

The signs of a stroke depend on the side of the brain that’s affected, the part of the brain affected and how severely the brain is injured. Sometimes it’s completely painless. Sometimes it is associated with a headache.

People having a stroke may experience some or all of these warning signs, some of which can be subtle:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

To easily remember the sudden signs, learn and remember “BE FAST.” When you spot these signs, you will know that you need to immediately call 911 for help:

  • B for Balance: Does the person have a loss of balance, or is the person dizzy? Is the person walking differently?

  • E for Eyes: Can the person see out of both eyes? Ask if the person has sudden vision loss or blurry or double vision.
  • F for Face drooping: Does one side of the face look uneven or like it is drooping? Ask the person if it feels numb. Tell the person to smile and check if it is uneven.
  • A for Arm weakness: Does one of the person’s arms feel numb? Ask the person to raise both arms and see if one arm drifts downward.
  • S for Slurred speech: Is the person’s speech hard to understand? Does the person seem confused? Is the person having trouble understanding you?
  • T for Time: If someone has any of these warning signs, call 911. Note the time the first symptoms appeared, and share this information with the first responders.
