What Are Ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds are non-invasive imaging procedures that involve no exposure to radiation. They use sound waves to capture images that examine organs and structures inside the body. These tests can be performed to find abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, breast, arteries and veins. In addition, ultrasounds excel at monitoring pregnancy and infant development. They produce images of soft tissue and internal organs to diagnose causes of swelling, infection and pain.
