What is an MRI?
An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a scan that uses powerful magnets
and radio waves to create precise body images to aid in diagnosing and
treating many illnesses and conditions. At North Oaks Diagnostic Center
and Livingston Parish Medical Complex, our MRI is circular-shaped, with
flared openings on both sides, and provides the clearest and most accurate
picture possible. This is because the magnet strength is up to five times
stronger than that of an open MRI, providing high-quality, high-resolution
images while reducing scan times.
What Is Breast MRI?
Breast MRI is a form of diagnostics used to develop highly detailed pictures
of the inside of the breast to identify any irregularities or to gain
information about possible breast conditions. MRI of the breast may be
utilized to obtain information when the results provided by other methods
such as ultrasound or mammography are insufficient or unclear. The process
utilizes radio waves, advanced computer technology, and magnetic fields
to produce a clear picture that can be assessed by a medical professional.
Why Is Breast MRI Used?
Some of the most common applications for MRI of the breast include:
- Screening women who are at a higher risk of breast cancer due to a family
history of breast or ovarian cancer or other factors
- Screening women with dense breast tissue for breast cancer
- Assessing the extent of cancer post-diagnosis of breast cancer
- Post-chemotherapy treatment
- Evaluation of silicone breast implants
- Evaluating abnormalities difficult to assess in a mammography
- Evaluating a lumpectomy site post-breast cancer treatment
Results are provided to your physician typically within 48 hours of your
visit. Studies are read by a board-certified radiologist with North Oaks
Imaging Associates, and are available to your physician in a CD format
